Keyboarding Super Stars

Do you have what it takes to be a Keyboarding Super Star? Take our keyboarding challenges to improve your keyboarding technique and increase your keyboarding speed. In order to truly improve you need to practice keyboarding just like any other skill. You are training your fingers to know the keys they need to type and the reaches they need to make. Try to practice at home using the Practice Activities or the Keyboarding Lesson Sites and concentrate on using the correct technique every time you sit at a keyboard!

Challenge #1

  • Take the 2-minute #35 (Classic Tales) Timed Typing Test. You can use the backspace key to correct errors. You will be recording your Calculated Speed from this test. You may take this test a second time if you wish to try to improve your score. Do not do this more than twice.
  • Add your information to the Keyboarding Spreadsheet for your grade:
    • Enter your calculated speed for Challenge #1
    • Enter your goal for this class - your goal must be at lest 8 WPM higher than your calculated speed for the day. The suggested goal is at least 5*Your Grade (e.g. 4th Grade = 20, 5th Grade = 25, etc.) WPM. If you are within 10WPM of this goal, use this instead of 8 WPM higher. You set your goal once and try to achieve it. Do not change your goal every time you complete a challenge!
  • Mavis Beacon Lessons:
    • Set up a new account for yourself in Mavis Beacon. Use your REAL NAME on your account. Your WPM goal should be the goal you entered on the spread sheet or the minimum recommended speed for your age whichever is higher.
    • Go to lessons and choose Beginner Typist. Do not test yourself. Everyone should start from the very first lesson. Some of you will be very proficient at this but we want to start at the beginning just the same to make sure we are all using proper technique. I will be checking your technique so sit up straight and keep those fingers on the home row!
